Alaska Airlines today began twice-weekly nonstop service between Los Angeles and Loreto, Mexico, on the Eastern Shore of Baja astride the Sea of Cortez. Loreto becomes Alaska Airlines’ eighth destination in Mexico and is regarded as unique for its relaxed pace and focus on the natural beauty and ecology of a place described by locals as "where the mountains come to swim."

"We are pleased to launch service to this destination that already is well-known to whale-watchers," said Gregg Saretsky, executive vice president of marketing and planning. "The Sea of Cortez’s abundant sea life is a dream for snorkelers and sport fishermen. Visitors also can enjoy Loreto’s pristine beaches and hiking, golf, tennis and water sports — all in a slower-paced atmosphere where the watchword is relaxation."

Alaska’s Thursday and Sunday departures are supported by a partnership with the Loreto Bay Company, a subsidiary of the Trust for Sustainable Development. The Loreto Bay Company is developer of The Villages of Loreto Bay, a planned 6,000-home resort community with a pedestrian orientation and architecture in the Baja adobe style.

Flying the route initially will be Alaska’s 140-seat MD 80 aircraft transitioning in March to the 144-seat 737-400 aircraft featuring leather seats. Flights depart Los Angeles International Airport 11:10 a.m. PST and arrive at Loreto at 1:59 p.m. MST. The northbound flights depart Loreto at 4 p.m. MST and arrive in Los Angeles at 4:55 p.m. PST.

Alaska’s popular In-flight Cafe service will be available for passengers wishing to purchase a meal.

Alaska Airlines, the nation’s ninth largest carrier, and its sister carrier, Horizon Air, together serve 88 cities in Alaska, the Lower 48, Canada and Mexico.
